The Aruu Falls are located in northern Uganda within Pader District about 4 and half kilometers from the Pader-Kitgum highway. The waterfalls are located in the middle of a forested area and the encompassing area is inhabited by the Acholi and Langi people who are mainly peasant farmers.

Besides viewing these beautiful waterfalls, there are a number of activities you can enjoy at and around the waterfalls. Below we have highlighted some of the activities

Picnic Lunches: You may enjoy a picnic lunch on one of the large rocks at the bottom of the falls as you enjoy the cool breeze of Uganda – the Pearl of Africa

Nature Walks: there are interesting nature walks around the falls to even to the nearby communities and these are led by local guides. These walks will offer you an opportunity to meet and interact with some of the local people, visit their villages and see their traditional homesteads.

Visit the local Market: there is a local market supplied with fresh produces from the local’s farms. There you will be able to buy some fresh fruits like mangoes, passion fruits, watermelons plus so many others when in season. Also those interested in buying a souvenir like some pieces crafted art works, this will be the perfect place to visit.

Photography: the waterfalls offer a very beautiful background for photographs and video recording, so anyone interested in doing so, this is a unique and perfect.

Bird watching: being a source of water to this area, you will see several water birds and other bird species around these waterfalls and the most commonly species include: weaver birds, hornbills, African wagtail, red bishops, Egyptian goose, eastern grey plantain eater, stonechat and the Secretary Bird.

Swimming and Rock Climbing: this is also done at the falls however we should warn you that the rocks are very slippery to climb so climbing and swimming is done at your own risk
Primate watching: because the area is fairly forested, you may be lucky to see some of the primates especially the Vervet Monkeys.

Top Things to do and see i Murchison Falls Game Park

There are many things to do and see in Murchison Falls National Park,  something for everyone, most of all you experience the African Wild, the African Bush, Forest, Wildlife, Birds, Primates and the River Nile. Murchison Falls is more than square miles, more than 76 species of mammals and 451 species of birds.

You will find large herds of buffaloes and elephants here, the endangered Rothschild Giraffes in great numbers, the stealthy leopard (usually alone except during mating season and of course of the king of the beasts – lions, there are many antelopes such as Jackson’s hartebeest, Bushbucks, Uganda Kob, Waterbucks, and Warthogs.

Along the River Nile you will see enormous Nile Crocodiles and a vast number of Hippos – advice – keep your camera ready.

As you drive through the park you will also come across a number of Olive Baboons, Patas Monkeys, while in the forests of the park you can often spot black and white Colobus Monkeys, even chimpanzees can be spotted on occasion while taking a guided nature walk in Rabongo Forest.

Murchison Falls Park has been declared one of the best birding locations in all of Africa with 451 recorded species such as the Shoebill Stork, the Goliath Heron – the largest heron in the world – and pairs of elegant Grey Crowned Cranes – Uganda’s national bird.

Seen along the Nile are the Blue-headed Coucal, Swamp Flycatcher, Squacco Heron, African Jacana, Sandpipers, Denham’s Bustard, Abyssinian Ground-Hornbill, Black-billed Barbet, Black-headed Gonolek, Eastern Grey Plantain-Eater, Piapiac, Silverbird, Weaver Birds, Pied, Giant and Malachite Kingfishers, Red-throated Bee-Eater, White-browed Sparrow Weaver, Speckle-fronted Weaver and African Quail-Finch to name a few

Track rhinos in Uganda

The next stopover before the park is Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary – an effort to re-introduce rhinos back into the wild after they became regionally extinct some years back. The sanctuary is on 7,000 hectares of land located just south of Murchison Falls National Park. You can even encounter the younger rhinos on foot with a guide.

Nile boat cruise

Murchison Falls National Park is divided into two by the Nile River. Water flows all-year-round flowing into Lake Albert before proceeding into South Sudan. This is a great place to enjoy a boat safari and you can even visit the falls themselves via boat. Hippos, crocs, water monitors as well as other animals all gather along the river, making for some spectacular game viewing.

Chimpanzee trekking 

East African chimpanzees also call the park home, occurring in the Budongo forests. Chimpanzee trekking is available where you can spend a couple of hours with man’s closest living relative.

Game drive safaris

Elephants, buffalo, lions and leopards all reside in the northern parts of the park. Some other special sightings include the Ugandan kob, oribi, Jackson hartebeest and the Rothschild’s giraffe. Murchison Falls National Park, along with Kidepo Valley National Park, is the only place to see this magnificent subspecies of giraffe in the wild.
